Maja Siska

Installation of works handmade from sheep’s fleece using traditional methods of spinning, felting, weaving and tanning. The works reflect the artist’s own experience of sheep farming and respectfully highlight the incredible beauty and quality of Icelandic sheep wool.

This series of hand made works from wool and hide is a manifestation of the artist´s experiences with sheep farming, from lambing to slaughter. The works reflect Maja´s respect and feeling of kinship with the animal that made it possible for Icelanders to survive on their island for the last millennia. Working with her bare hands, practicing old crafts and going through time consuming and labour intensive processes becomes a form of mediation which leads to an experience of connectedness. The artefacts created in this journey of reverence elevate today´s mundane by-products of sheep farming to another level, they become an ”Ode to the sheep”.
